In 1921, after three years of throwing Halloween-style street parties, a handful of West Side businessmen formed a club to do it properly. The first official festival was one night: a costume parade at 8 PM, a masked ball until 11:30, and a crowd estimated at 25,000. Total cost? $340.98. Each member got billed ten bucks to cover it (the original group-chat Venmo request).

It stayed a one- or two-night affair for decades. The first rides rolled in for 1940 (a Ferris wheel, a merry-go-round, and mini autos parked on 12th Avenue). The festival paused for World War II in 1943–45, came back in 1946 as a full Monday-to-Saturday run, and in 1947 crowned its first queen, Doris Buckman. That was also the year the club finally turned a profit: $340.69. Twenty-five years to basically earn back the cost of the first party. Extremely Midwest.

The '50s are when it became the Fall Fest: nonprofit booths started lining Franklin, Amateur Hour launched in 1950, and big-name entertainers came through mid-decade. Then the traditions stacked up:

Today the club counts about 300 active members plus 100-plus honorable life members, all living by one motto: “From Small Acorns, Large Oaks Grow.” Their newer slogan is even better: Root, Boost, or Scoot.

Here's the part out-of-towners don't get: every booth on Franklin is run by a nonprofit. Churches, band boosters, scout troops, PTOs, fraternities, the Humane Society. Your third pork chop is technically philanthropy. We went through the entire 2026 Munchie Map so you don't have to. Numbers after the arrow are booth numbers.

Tenderloin completist? Eight booths is a lot of breaded pork to rank. We know a website.

The midway comes courtesy of North American Midway Entertainment, roughly 34 rides deep, and it runs on FUNTAGG: a reloadable tap card. Load it at a kiosk, tap at the ride, scream accordingly. New cards carry a one-time $2 activation fee, with a 2-credit minimum.

The math: most grown-up rides cost 12–15 credits, so $6 to $7.50 a pop. That means the $30 wristband pays for itself around ride number five. Riding four or fewer? Buy credits. Planning to emotionally commit to the Tilt-A-Whirl? Wristband.

🎢 Thrill seekers: Supernova 360 (55" and age 14+), Screamer (52"), Vertigo, and Himalaya top out at 15 credits. The Giant Wheel is 15 too, with no single riders, so bring a date. 🧸 Little ones: Circus Train, Dino, and Crazy Cab start at 36" and 9 credits; Bees, Dizzy Dragon, and Bear Affair need 42" to ride alone.

Ride list, heights, and prices are the latest posted on the official site (carried over from the 2025 festival). Ride operators make the final call on height, so confirm at the booth.

Kids build glowing, battery-lit "lighthouses" and pull them down Franklin on wagons. It's a 1920s custom the Nut Club brought back in 1985, and about 100 lighthouses are expected. No signup required: report to the Old National Bank drive-in at 2119 W. Michigan St. (between 10th and 11th) from 6–6:30 PM. Every entrant gets 4 ride tickets; the top 10 get a wristband voucher and a ride on the Lighthouse float in Saturday's Main Parade. Iffy weather? WIKY radio announces the plan starting at 4 PM.

Seventh and eighth graders, gender-balanced teams, and a combined team weight that must land between 1,280 and 1,340 pounds. Rubber soles only. Basic jersey gloves only. The rules specifically say no fishing gloves, and we need to know the story behind that one. A tradition since 1970.

Eighth graders, picked by their classmates, judged on poise and personality. The Queen gets a tiara, trophy, and a dozen roses. The crown dates back to that first queen in 1947.

Running since 1950. Auditioned local kids compete for cash and trophies in Junior (preschool–5th), Middle School (6th–8th), and Senior (high school) divisions for singing and dancing, plus a vocal-only college category up to age 24. Open to kids of all ages, with or without a pet. Costumes strongly encouraged, for humans and critters alike. Lineup and judging run 9–9:30 AM at the St. Boniface parking lot (Wabash & Michigan), then it's west on Franklin past the main stage, with treats for everyone at 12th Avenue. ATVs, go-carts, and side-by-sides can pull floats; full-size vehicles can't. No business or political promo.

The grand finale: roughly 100 units of marching bands, floats, and assorted glorious chaos rolling down West Franklin to St. Joe Avenue. Franklin closes to through traffic at Fulton around 11 AM. The top five floats split prize money, with $2,000 for first place, as voted by festivalgoers. So yes, your opinion matters here.

Since 1990, around 600 students with special needs get the festival all to themselves: rides, games, and food, all free, all donated. It isn't a public event, but it might be the best thing on Franklin all week.

Daytime acts play the main stage 11 AM–1 PM all week, perfect for a lunch break. Nights get louder on Stage 2:

Wednesday's headliner isn't just a festival band. The Cold Stares are an Evansville-based blues-rock outfit (with Madisonville, Kentucky roots) signed to Mascot Records. Their debut sold 25,000 copies and hit #1 on Amazon's blues-rock chart, their song "Head Bent" landed in a Dodge commercial, and they've earned praise from Classic Rock magazine and toured overseas. Fuzzed-out, Zeppelin-sized riffs, next to a booth selling brain sandwiches. Only on the West Side.

Started in 2019 and now basically a regional sport. Half the pot goes to one lucky winner; the Nut Club's half fuels scholarships, renovations, youth programs, and local nonprofits. Watch it grow:

That corner is home base for Lost & Found and Safe Kid Armbands. The Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office has also run a Find-A-Parent program there, 1–7 PM daily starting Monday. Put an armband on the tiny ones before the pronto pup coma sets in.

First Aid is in the Franklin Street Tavern parking lot. See something, say something: call 911, flag an officer, or tell any Nut Club member.

Side streets fill up fast. Plenty of nearby lots charge for parking, and that money usually goes to local nonprofits, so consider it a pregame donation. In recent years the city has run a weekday METS lunch shuttle (roughly 11 AM–2 PM) from the C.K. Newsome Center and Civic Center to Franklin & Wabash; keep an eye out for 2026 details before counting on it.

Hit Franklin around 11. Catch the daytime act on the main stage, grab one Legend, one sweet, and a cider, and be back at your desk before anyone asks questions. Repeat daily. Tell no one.

Cider in hand, ride the Giant Wheel (no single riders, so it's practically a romance mandate), split a funnel cake, then The Cold Stares on Stage 2 at 8.

Family Day Sunday, 1–7 PM, for kiddie rides with a fraction of the crowd. Or Saturday: costume up for the 10 AM Pet Parade, then hit the kiddie rides in Acorn Plaza.

Pet Parade at 10. Wristband on by 10:01. Rides, booths, repeat. Claim a curb for the 4:30 Main Parade. Close it out with That's What She Said on the main stage at 8. Sleep until Tuesday.

Every oak on the West Side started as an acorn nobody bothered to eat. Fall Fest did too: a $340 masked ball in 1921, paid for out of a few businessmen's pockets. One hundred and five Octobers later, that acorn has grown into a mile of Franklin Street, 137 booths feeding schools and churches and scout troops, and a Half Pot whose branches keep reaching higher every single fall.

So when you show up this year, you're not just a customer. You're part of the root system. Every pronto pup plants something: a band trip, a church roof, a scholarship for a kid you'll never meet. Go be a good squirrel. Small acorns. Tall oaks. Full bellies.
