Evansville, this is the week summer starts clearing its throat. The $2 movies wrap Thursday. The sidewalk chalk crew at Oaklyn does its final masterpiece Wednesday. The library summer reading programs go out the way any respectable summer should go out: in a foam pit at Willard on Saturday.

And then Thursday, two enormous things land at once. A real B-29 Superfortress parks at the Wartime Museum for four days, and the zoo flips on more than a mile of glowing lanterns after dark. Back-to-school haircut lines start forming Saturday. We see them. We are choosing joy first. Let’s get buzzin’.

There is something perfect about a seventy-year-old bomber landing in Evansville the same week the two-dollar movies end. Summer is doing its farewell tour and going out loud.

So take the last lap, Evansville. Get the foam in the car seats. Let them talk your ear off about a B-29 they touched with their actual hands. Stand in the zoo after dark under a mile of lanterns and let bedtime slide by an hour, because the backpacks are coming and this week is not about that. One more matinee. One more midway of lights. One more buzz. See you out there.

Forward this to the parent friend still insisting school does not start for ages.
