🍯 THE HIVE CHECK
Summer’s Taking Its Last Lap

Evansville, this is the week summer starts clearing its throat. The $2 movies wrap Thursday. The sidewalk chalk crew at Oaklyn does its final masterpiece Wednesday. The library summer reading programs go out the way any respectable summer should go out: in a foam pit at Willard on Saturday.

And then Thursday, two enormous things land at once. A real B-29 Superfortress parks at the Wartime Museum for four days, and the zoo flips on more than a mile of glowing lanterns after dark. Back-to-school haircut lines start forming Saturday. We see them. We are choosing joy first. Let’s get buzzin’.

🐝 THE HIVE FIVE

The big ones for
little wings.

Worth the car seat wrestling match. Worth the snack bag. Worth being home by naptime.

Warbird Weekend: B-29 “DOC” & P-51 “Gunfighter”
AVIATION
ALL AGES
Thu, Jul 30 – Sun, Aug 2 · 11 AM–4 PM daily · Evansville Wartime Museum

“DOC” is one of only two airworthy B-29 Superfortresses left on the entire planet, and it is sitting on a runway in Evansville for four days. A P-51 Mustang comes with it. Ground tours of both planes run all four days. Your kid will talk about this in October.

🎒 Parent Survival Tip: Special event pricing, not regular admission: $20 per person 16+, $10 for ages 5–15, free under 5, or $60 for a family of four. P-51 rides run all four days, but B-29 rides are Saturday and Sunday only and sell separately through b29doc.com. It is a runway in July, so hats and water are not optional.

Wild Summer Lights Opening Weekend
ANIMALS
ALL AGES
Thu, Jul 30 – Sun, Aug 2 · 6–10 PM · Mesker Park Zoo

The zoo after dark, wrapped in more than a mile of giant illuminated Chinese lanterns, plus live local music and a rotating food truck lineup every night. This is opening weekend, which means you get to be the family that saw it first. Special event tickets required.

🎒 Parent Survival Tip: Sunday, August 2 is Accessibility Night, built for sensory-sensitive visitors. If bright and loud is a hard no in your house, that is your night. For everyone else: it does not get dark here until well past 9 in July, so the little ones may hit the wall before the lights fully pop.

$2 Family Film Festival: Final Week
MOVIES
ALL AGES
Tue, Jul 28 · Wed, Jul 29 · Thu, Jul 30 · 9:30 AM · Showplace Cinemas

Eight weeks of two-dollar movie mornings end Thursday. Tuesday is Newburgh, Henderson, and Princeton. Wednesday is Showplace East. Thursday is Showplace North, Jasper, and Harrisburg. Two bucks a ticket, four bucks for the kids tray with popcorn and a drink.

🎒 Parent Survival Tip: This is the cheapest two hours of air conditioning in the Tri-State and it disappears Thursday. Doors at 9:30 AM means you are home before lunch with the morning already won. Check your closest location’s day, because they rotate and showing up Wednesday in Newburgh gets you a locked lobby.

Grand Finale! Foam Party in the Park
PLAY
ALL AGES
Sat, Aug 1 · 1 PM · Willard Public Library

Willard closes out its entire summer reading season by filling the park with foam. There is also a grand prize drawing, and you do not have to be present to win, but come on. You are not going to miss the foam. Outdoor program, weather permitting.

🎒 Parent Survival Tip: Swimsuit or clothes you have already made peace with. Bring a full change plus a towel, because foam-soaked kids and car upholstery have a famously bad relationship. Willard’s park has real shade, which in August is basically a luxury amenity.

Back to School Bash at Myriad
ANIMALS
ALL AGES
Sun, Aug 2 · 12–3 PM · Myriad Brewing Co., Newburgh

Goats. Pigs. Chickens. Puppy snuggles. Face painting, glitter tattoos, live music from Between The Frets, and Mother Truckers Pizzeria donating a slice of every pie. Entry is by donation and all of it goes to Warrick Humane Society shelter pets.

🎒 Parent Survival Tip: Bring small bills. Feed cups are $2 per animal type, goat glamour shots are $10 with a digital download, and face paint starts at $10. Entry itself is whatever you can give, so the honest budget here is roughly “one pizza plus however many goats your kid negotiates.”
📋 THE FAMILY GAME PLAN

What’s on, day by day.

Every kid-friendly event this week by day and start time. Screenshot it, send it to the family group chat. The County Fair runs all week too (details up top in the Hive Five).

🐝 THE FINAL BZZZ
✈️ Wheels Up, Summer

There is something perfect about a seventy-year-old bomber landing in Evansville the same week the two-dollar movies end. Summer is doing its farewell tour and going out loud.

So take the last lap, Evansville. Get the foam in the car seats. Let them talk your ear off about a B-29 they touched with their actual hands. Stand in the zoo after dark under a mile of lanterns and let bedtime slide by an hour, because the backpacks are coming and this week is not about that. One more matinee. One more midway of lights. One more buzz. See you out there.

Forward this to the parent friend still insisting school does not start for ages.
